Understand the danger
Boling an egg in the microwave without removing the shell creates very hot and high pressure steam inside the shell which can make the egg to explode even if you take proper precautions.
The explosion can break the microwave door causing serious burn if you are standing close to it.
Microwave hard boiled eggs can even explode just after you remove them from the microwave due to the high and hot pressure inside the shell.
Procedure
· Boil water in the microwave
Put water in a microwave safe container and place it in the microwave to boil.
The water should be enough to fully submerge the eggs you are boiling but you should leave at least 2.5 cm clearance at the top.
Heating the water first without submerging the eggs reduces the risk of the shell exploding though it will still get a few cracks.
In case you want to remove the water, ensure you use a cloth or an oven mitt.
· Pierce the egg shell
Using any clean object with a sharp point such as a paper clip or thumbtack, pierce the thinner end of the egg shell.
Make sure that you pierce deep enough to break the membrane that is located just below the shell surface.
Since as the egg cooks it solidifies blocking the holes, you should make several holes on the thinner end of the shell.
· Put the eggs in the boiling water
Carefully submerge the eggs in the boiling water in an upright position so that the holes do not leak.
· Cook with medium power for 5 minutes
A typical egg will take 5-6 minutes to become hard-boiled but it can get ready sooner if the power of the microwave is high or if you like softer eggs.
Even with precaution taken, leave the room as the egg cooks in case an explosion occurs.
· Run cold water on the egg
Once the egg is ready, remove it from the microwave and hold it under cold running water to stop the cooking process.
Now use a spoon to remove the shell, cut it open and enjoy.
